Urethra (Urethritis)

Urethritis is the inflammation of the urethra — the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body. It usually occurs due to bacterial or viral infection, and can affect both men and women. The condition often causes discomfort or pain during urination, along with irritation or discharge from the urethral opening.

Urethritis is commonly caused by sexually transmitted infections such as Chlamydia trachomatis or Neisseria gonorrhoeae, but it may also result from non-infectious causes like chemical irritation or trauma from medical instruments. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are essential to prevent the infection from spreading to other parts of the urinary tract.

  • Redness or itching at the urethral opening
  • Discharge from the urethra (more common in men)
